Ten interior design projects by Florence Institute of Design International

Another trend is the integration of environmental and social responsibility into design, with designers seeking to create designs that are sustainable and socially conscious. Swiss design has had a significant impact on the visual language of the European Union, with its clean lines and minimalist aesthetic becoming a defining characteristic of Western design. Many prominent EU brands and organizations have embraced Swiss design principles in their branding and communications, recognizing the power of its clear and concise messaging. Jan Tschichold became a leading advocate of modernist design after visiting the Wiemar Bauhaus exhibition in 1923.

And let’s not forget about articles on postmodern graphic design, grid systems in graphic design, Gestalt principles of design, and the golden ratio in design. It’s like the design version of that friend who’s always straight to the point. Meanwhile in Holland, artists like Theo von Doesburg and Piet Mondrian established a movement that came to be known as De Stijl (or simply “the style”). Spanning architecture, painting and graphic design, De Stijl’s principles were rooted in mathematics and grid forms that served as compositional tools. Swiss style is considered one of the most large-scale phenomena in graphic design.

Font-size as a tool for readability, impact and rythm

As the design world continues to evolve, new innovations and trends are emerging that build upon the principles of Swiss design while pushing the boundaries of what is possible. Max Bill was an architect, painter, typographer, industrial and graphic designer. He studied at the Bauhaus until late 1920’s when he moved to Zurich where he became a teacher and prime member of the Allianz group of graphic designers. There are also similar articles discussing visual hierarchy, graphic design movements, Bauhaus graphic design, and Brutalist graphic design. This move turned designers’ attention to the possibilities of single typefaces in a completely new way.

Swiss Design as the International Typographic Style

They saw designers as communicators, not artists, and believed that design should be grounded in rational universal principles discovered through a scientific approach. Their ideal of design was to achieve clarity and order and they saw no room for eccentricity or personal expression. They also saw design as something socially worthwhile and a serious profession to pursue.

How do Swiss design and Bauhaus compare?

Their style, which was called the International Typographic Style at the time, was guided by the ethos that design should be as invisible as possible. All traces of the designer’s subjectivity should be suppressed in order to let the “content” of a work shine through. It is similar to the axiom of architectural modernism that form should follow function. Asymmetrical layout was inherited by the Swiss school from the tradition of the International Typographic Style. Originating in the 1920s, the tradition of asymmetrical text layout became fundamental in Swiss graphic design. The Swiss school made asymmetry the basis of the graphic style, improving the techniques of asymmetrical layout and creating its stable standard.

Charles and Ray Eames

Inspired by the 1917 revolutions, Russian artists like Kasimir Malevich and El Lissitzky sought to re-define art for coming socialist era. Their solutions, Suprematism and Constructivism, utilized simplified geometric forms and strong, sans-serif typography placed in unusual configurations. The Bauhaus mantra of 'form follows function' applies to design in the spirit of the International Typographic movement.

The use of Helvetica might not define International Typographic Style, but its everywhere presence is a constant reminder of the impact those radical Swiss have in our everyday lives. About 125 miles northeast of Hofmann and Ruder’s School of Design, Max Bill and Otl Aicher opened their own school in Ulm, Germany. These teachings fell into step with the objectivity and readability of the International Typographic Style, which aims to create content that is easily recognized and understood by anyone who views it. Originally released by Danberry & Peignot in 1957, the family passed through the hands of the Haas Type Foundry before being purchased in 2007 (along with all of Linotype) by Monotype. Designers Frank Slesinski and Serena Brosio collaborated on the charming living room in the Gatehouse. “One of the main things we did was add a window seat, which looks like it should always have been here,” Slesinski says.

Graphic design, 1945–75

After World War II, designers in Switzerland and Germany codified Modernist graphic design into a cohesive movement called Swiss Design, or the International Typographic Style. These designers sought a neutral and objective approach that emphasized rational planning and de-emphasized the subjective, or individual, expression. They constructed modular grids of horizontal and vertical lines and used them as a structure to regularize and align the elements in their designs. These designers preferred photography (another technical advance that drove the development of graphic design) as a source for imagery because of its machine-made precision and its ability to make an unbiased record of the subject.

How the Swiss Style Relates to the Web

“It was one of my favorite rooms in the house because it was the one that had the most history preserved, and I wanted to really celebrate that,” she told AD PRO. For her Foyer of Enchantment, Scheff installed a custom mural by Hattas Art Studios, a John Richard chandelier dripping with glass leaves, a silk wall covering by Aux Abris, and organic furniture created with Amorph Studio. “I wanted you to feel like you were transported to another time and place,” Scheff says. Transforming discarded climbing ropes into handwoven rugs, this project is the embodiment of joy through the act of repurposing and giving new life to such materials. Resulting in functional and decorative pieces, they add a vibrant ambiance to interior spaces while telling a story of resilience and adventure by evoking memories of past climbing experiences.

International Typographic Style is a minimalist design style that emphasizes simplicity, objectivity, and readability. Designs are set asymmetrically within a grid to present content in a formalized way. The “typographic” descriptor reflects the style’s use of left-aligned sans-serif typefaces that were typically paired with photographic images, abstract graphics, and modest but bold color palettes. Swiss Design, also known as the International Typographic Style, is a graphic design approach developed in Switzerland in the 1950s that emphasizes cleanliness, readability, and objectivity. Characterized by sans-serif typefaces, grids, and asymmetrical layouts, it focuses on simplicity and functionality in design. The 1960s also saw the rapid decline of hand- and machine-set metal type as they were replaced by display-and-keyboard phototype systems.

Despite these new trends, the principles of Swiss design will continue to be a guiding force in the world of design, shaping the way we communicate visually and providing a foundation for future innovations. Wilsonminer is the home of Wilson Miner, designer and co-founder at EveryBlock. Miner worked on the first major redesign of Apple and designed the identity (and the admin interface) of the Django web framework. The great visual impact of this site are the big photographs that stand from the background.

Presenting three products as part of the exhibition, each piece represents one of three outdoor furniture collections with a core focus on the joy felt from being outside. Utilizing the language of design to cross geographical borders and connect cultures, the Swiss-German duo collaborates with companies from Italy and Denmark that have a strong and established design heritage. Developed with flexibility in mind, the Factor Light has a rotatable core that can be positioned to provide 360° of infinite movement, enabling users to create an environment personalized to their needs. Crafted from extruded aluminium, with an integrated LED bulb, the lamp can be used alone or grouped alongside others by implementing bridge connectors. Echoing the design approach behind the Factor Light, the DB20 ceramic tableware collection plays with light and shadow through two- and three-dimensional patterns. Glazed on the inside, the seven pieces have a raw exterior finish, giving them a softer tactility.

In this article, we showed you what Swiss Style is, the characteristics of the movement, famous designers, and why the International Typographic Style is still relevant to this day. It features a beautiful and attractive yellow color, big type treatment, and organized layouts. The inside pages of the template allow you to show pictures as big as possible, perfect for an art catalog.

With all the devices handcrafted in Bern, Switzerland, the in-house production team prides itself on meticulous attention to detail. Once built, each unit undergoes an extensive measurement routine before leaving the workshop and taking residence in living rooms, bars, and clubs all over the world. A detail of the Eames House (also known as Case Study House No. 8), built in 1949, designed by Charles and Ray Eames, © Eames Office, LLC (eamesoffice.com). Design always remained the centre of their lives, with working days running from 9am to 10pm and a full-time cook on hand so they needn't leave the studio to eat. After Charles' death in 1978, Ray worked hard to complete any unfinished projects but, having done so, did not seek new ones beyond her two remarkable books.

The contrast looks very beautiful and shows that there are use cases for both serif and sans-serif typefaces. Along with that, there’s a significant amount of whitespace that greatly leverages readability. Adrian Frutiger is the master typeface designer behind the Univers, Frutiger and Avenir typefaces, just to mention a few. He studied calligraphy at the Zürich Kunstgewerbeschule, which along with his interest in sculpture helped shape his style as a typeface designer.

As I mentioned last week, flat design is a new foundation, but what are we going to add on top of the foundation? I want to think about how the web differs from print and what those differences suggest for what we’ll build on the new foundation of flat design.

Menu for Schaefer's Canal House in Chesapeake City, MD

schaefer's canal house chesapeake city maryland

Great food at the restaurant. Tom the Dockmaster was very friendly and helpful. He guided us in to our spot over the radio and took our lines on arrival. Lively place with live music over the weekend. Nice location and great staff. The restaurant was good and reasonably priced.

Vegetarian options,

Steven the Dock Master was amazing. He's very knowledgeable and even washed the water marks and filled our fenders when we got fuel. Passed out leaflets with all kind of info. And cracking jokes the whole time.

Happy hour drinks,

There are no shower facilities and the bathrooms are serviceable. If you have tried the above and still do not see availability, the marina may be full for your dates or unable to accommodate your vessel size. Use our search bar to find nearby marinas or private listings.

LGBTQ+ friendly,

The facility has undergone some fantastic rehabilitations to both the dock area as well as the main house. Boaters are able to dock at either the fixed dock when booking with shore power, or the floating docks if power is not needed. The marina offers 30amp and 50amp shore power.

Filled with a wide variety of seafood specialties and casual bites, there is a taste here that will please any pallet. The restaurant does have special menus for holidays, as well as an amazing event space, perfect for hosting your next big shindig. The beautiful veranda that overlooks the creek gives guests a quiet spot to catch up on some serious R&R.

Great help from Dockmaster and dockhand. The Army Corp had actually closed the C&D Canal due to fog. I contacted the Dockmaster and he called me when the Canal was open to traffic.

Current and pilings made for a rough night. The restaurant was lively and the food was good. As to the accommodations there is a substantial amount of current through the marina and the tidal change is roughly 3’. With the marina only offering pilings that makes it tough to position bumpers for cushioning as the shifting current bounces the boat around.

Wheelchair accessible entrance,

Nice for a quick stop especially with the shoaling at the entrance to the Anchorage across the canal. Marina Staff are great but tug and barge traffic very challenging. A little crazy on a holiday but the staff is great and works hard. We will definitely add Schaefer's to our 'must return' list. Yes, Schaefer's Canal House has a kids menu, view their kids menu on Sirved.

Much enjoyed the large bar/restaurant - good food and service. This is a restaurant with a dock that accepts transients, not a true marina. Note that they have fuel (gas and diesel), but no other amenities for transients (no pump-out/showers/laundry/after-hours toilets etc.). Those would be welcome additions that could lead to longer stays.

Staff was excellent from the time I hit the Fuel dock, until I was down the pier at my slip. Dockhands were knowledgeable and knew how to secure boat to fixed pier. Fun being on the edge of the restaurant and people eating who wanted to be more informed about boats. Great experience on the C and D canal. The staff was incredibly helpful when docking and getting advice on transiting the canal and out the the Delaware Bay. The restaurant is very good and the area is clean and well maintained.

Very helpful & professional, well versed in the challenges of their current. Excellent hours for transients if trying to stretch your day. Nice casual restaurant on site.

schaefer's canal house chesapeake city maryland

Wakes from passing boats were not bad even on a weekend. A little noisier than most places due to the bridge traffic and the restaurant but not bad. Good and pleasant dock help (Olivia).

Again, great docking support. The restaurant had a live band and the food was excellent. Very pleasant stay and great stop between Cape May and Annapolis. Nice stop between the Cheasapeake and Cape May. In the past, we have stopped at Delaware City but this is more convenient. We were docked at a long fixed dock alongside the canal and the restaurant.

No showers, laundry or grocery nearby. Schaefer's Canal House is a hidden gem along the Northern Shores of the Chesapeake Bay. Located in Chesapeake City, MD, the deep-water marina is nestled on Back Creek, which branches off of the Elk River.

Very friendly and competent Dock Master, Steve, guided us right into fuel dock and then around to out spot on the bulkhead. Despite passing ships, there was very little rocking from wakes. Restaurant was good and steps from the boat. This is a really nice joint. Good food & drink, with easy access. We docked right along-side parallel to the canal.

Staff wear masks,

Dock guy, Steve, carefully made sure we were tied with long spring lines to handle the tide. This is a great place to stay. Lively and fun but also quiet and calm at night. Restaurant is good and convenient. Currents not a significant issue when taken bow first.

Liked it so much we stayed a second night. Quaint town and very nice restaurant. Please note fuel dock is being renovating and will not be available until May. Schaefer's Canal House menu has been digitised by Sirved.

For Boaters

Great watching canal traffic. Be aware there are no showers or local stores. Current runs strong up to 2.5 knots.

Payment Options

Nice location with the restaurant and the dockmaster hours were very convenient for our 5p arrival. Only suggestion is to add showers to the facility. Please provide your ETA, if you will be needing fuel, and direction of approach in the Notes section at checkout. Note that the marina has both fixed and floating docks on site, however the floating docks do not offer shore power. A band was playing, dinner was being served along the docks, and after a quick shower on board, dinner on the dock was fantastic! The band continued after we went back on board, and it added to our cocktails on the flybridge.

They are able to run this top notch facility because of the knowledgable & friendly deckhands. (Olivia Marro, Leah Stubbs, Scott Seisler) Schaefer's is without question your #1 way point when transiting the C&D Canal. Staff was great - and knowledgeable of local conditions and setting lines for the 3+ foot tide swings. Restaurant next to dock was excellent. Not sure if there was a 'go fast' boat convention in town, but the exhaust noise from noon 'til dark was really ridiculous. The high outside dock in front of the restaurant prohibited us from getting on and off of the boat at low tide.

Since the main dockage is along a fixed dock it's fairly easy to pull up and the dockmaster is very helpful and friendly. I ate at the restaurant (nothing else around) the food is good. There aren't any showers, but I didn't find that to be an issue.

There are currently no photos.

Strong currents can be expected. We really enjoyed the bar and restaurant. I would definitely stay there again. Nice people and the dock hands do a great job. I recommend using this marina when passing thru the C & D Canal.

LGBTQ+ friendly,

Marina staff is very knowledgeable on currents and did a great job of securing the boat for an overnight stay. Will be using the Marina on my return trip. After a long run up the Chesapeake with foul current all day, we arrived at sunset. Steve stayed late to handle our lines for us and could not have been more helpful. The long face dock makes for a convenient stop when transiting the canal. Good dinner at the restaurant.

Great location midpoint on the C&D canal. While Schaefer's Canal House is an awesome marina, they also have an amazing bar and restaurant attached to it that second to none. During the season, you will find live music and events at The Lighthouse Bar on site. Additionally, the restaurant has beautiful deck seating that overlooks the water, with both indoor and outdoor dining options available.

Be prepared and time your canal transit and docking based on tides. Check AIS for commercial traffic before departing the dock. Note that the dock has no cleats to which you can tie, you'll need to throw a clove hitch or something around the pilings. The dock hands are quite good about helping with line handling.

Great stay at Schaefer's marina. Stopped at the fuel dock and took on 750 gallons of fuel. Dual pumps made fueling easy and fast. Nice discount for large quantity of fuel. Great line handling from the dock hands. Moved tp the bulkhead for the overnight stay.

Saturday evening saw Saturday Night Live’s Colin Jost serve as co-host alongside President Joe Biden. Jost’s wife Scarlett Johansson, meanwhile, brought the fashion in a columnar Giorgio Armani gown in white, while Rachel Brosnahan wore a slick black satin gown from Jonathan Cohen and Sophia Bush (making a glamorous red-carpet debut with her girlfriend, former soccer pro Ashlyn Harris) wore Harbison. Elsewhere on the red carpet, Chris Pine, Keri Russell, Fran Drescher, Molly Ringwald, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Rosario Dawson commingled with renowned journalists and broadcast journalists like Wolf Blitzer, Gayle King, and Dana Bash.

After all, what is a red carpet but a photo op in better clothing? And how many politicians have met a photo op they didn’t want to seize for a messaging moment? All anyone has to do is read their looks, if not their lips. Exterior of a suburban home with blue siding, a white front porch, and white shutters. Presenting the fashion equivalent of a united front were Sophia Bush and Ashlyn Harris, making their red carpet debut as a couple in matching Harbison looks, as well as Scarlett Johansson and her husband Colin Jost, in coordinating Giorgio Armani. Once a popular target of jokes about bad fashion (and not just from the evening’s featured comedian host), the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner has morphed in recent years into a less campy, more staid prelude to the Met Gala, which takes place days later.
